This painting was created based on a casual ‘ceremonial’ game my daughter and I often play. Tamara would cuddle under my dress while I keep her in a fetus-like position. One of these times I happened to look in the mirror while she played and the visualization of the setting struck me with its full meaning.
I named the last series I am working on: “Planted”. I “plant” portraits I have made in the past into a new setting collage. I start with an image study, and later play with different portraits and scenes. When a combination of image, setting and portraits ignites my imagination, I tailor a narrative for the characters.
The act of “planting” outside characters into a fiction, conveys the idea of the multi-layer personality and modern lifestyle. We all have many hidden, inaccessible, and fascinating layers to our personality. Hidden layers that contain our desires, secrets, weaknesses, dreams, obsessions, or fears. Especially true today, while virtual platforms and social media allow complete strangers who hold common interest to meet and connect.
I work with varied techniques: I cut and paste original portraits on a new canvas/photos/digital painting. I first make small-scale study sketches and later choose one setting with the original portrait on a real-life scale.
